New Museum of Contemporary Art
Having developed a reputation for exquisitely refined buildings, SANAA faced a very different kind of challenge with the New Museum in Lower Manhattan: Design a building for an anti-establishment museum in a scruffy-but-gentrifying part of town. Our Web coverage includes a slide show and video tour, along with a story about the project, a detailed analysis of the building’s structure, and a profile on leading engineer Mutsuro Sasaki.

Behind SANAA’s Illusion of Weightlessness
Now that the New Museum on Manhattan’s Lower East Side is complete, and its structure enclosed, there is little evidence of the system that supports the seven-story building that seems to be made up of nothing heavier than precariously stacked cardboard boxes.

Mutsuro Sasaki

Profile: Mutsuro Sasaki
Eight years after working on Toyo Ito’s Senda Mediatheque, the Japanese structural engineer Mutsuro Sasaki now finds himself in an enviable position where he can say, “If it’s not interesting to me, then I don’t take the work.” Sasaki is one of the structural engineers who worked with SANAA on the New Museum.
