My Boston: Steven Imrich

July, 2008

Steven Imrich takes us on a highly personal tour of Alvar Aalto's iconic Baker House at MIT, a Modernist building that also has "reverence and respect for the past." Imrich points out how the interior of the Baker House demonstrates the respect that Aalto had for Frank Llyod Wright. Baker House had a profound influence on Imrich when he was an architecture student at MIT. He notes that Aalto was a "green architect," who took great interest in how natural light influences space.

On our second tour, Imrich shows us Eero Saarinen's MIT Chapel, the "epitome of a landscape-driven architecture project." Imrich, who said the Saarinen Chapel had a strong influence on his career, is a principal at Cambridge Seven Associates, where he has helped design such important new buildings in Boston as the Children's Museum. On our third tour, he discusses the renovation and expansion of the museum, which earned LEED-Gold certification.
