Winning Projects From Around China Show That Good Design Is Good Business
![]() |
Architects and business people often seem to speak different languages. Architects love to talk about space, light, and transcending morphology. Business people use phrases like “return on investment” and “risk management.” The goal of the BusinessWeek/Architectural Record Awards is to create a dialogue between these two worlds and honor examples of design and business working together to further each other’s goals. Begun in 1997, the awards program has become one of the most prestigious in the world and one of the few to examine architecture from the perspective of the clients who commission it and the people who use it.
Taking a broad view of the term, we define “business” to include the work done by government agencies, universities, cultural organizations, and other not-for-profit institutions, in addition to corporations and companies. And we recognize the client/architect teams responsible for creating great works of design.
In 2005/6, we brought the BusinessWeek/Architectural Record Awards to China on a bi-annual basis, believing that the program’s message that “Good design is good business” would find fertile ground here. This year, we honor 13 building and planning projects ranging in size from a small house in Hong Kong to an 860,000-square-meter, mixed-use development near the center of Beijing. We selected five great public projects, but didn’t find any commercial buildings that lived up to our high standards. We created a new category for interior architecture and recognized residential, green, and preservation projects. We also selected as best client a real-estate developer that has made design an essential part of its business strategy and worked with innovative architects from China and abroad.
